Rate limits and what happens when the quota runs out

1 min read

There are two kinds of limits:

Rate limit (speed)

How many calls you may make per second/minute. If you hit the ceiling you get 429 Too Many Requests — wait a moment and try again. The rate limit depends on your plan.

Quota (monthly count)

The total number of calls your plan includes per period. The current figures are shown on Billing.

When the quota is used up

Further calls are rejected with 429 (quota_exceeded) until the period resets — you'll never get a surprise bill. To continue right away, upgrade your plan under Billing; the extra calls work immediately.

You get an email when 80% of the quota is used, and again at 100% — giving you time to upgrade before calls are rejected.
